Quilt Show

i’ve had a few ‘firsts’ this weekend.

one was attending my first-ever quilt show! it was supposed to be just me going, but then our almost-2-year-old daughter wouldn’t let me get dropped off alone so it was a family outing. we saw some fabulous quilts (if i can manage to get the pics off my phone, i’ll post them on here) and bought a little kit to make a toy from foam blocks. not sure yet if that’ll be a toy for our own Little One or if it’ll be gifted, so details to come.

the other ‘first’ was first time in a long time that i’ve gotten a quilt to progress as quickly as i did this weekend. i’m working on a quilt for a dear friend who’s expecting her first child, a girl. it’s not a big quilt, which helped it come together fast, but it’s also a great one (if i do say so myself). can’t wait to finish it off and then send it away so i can share the goods with you (the few of you who actually read this anymore).

so, plus side: yay quilt show and quilt progress! down side: nothing to share with you fine people… yet.

what teaser posts have you been drafting lately?

Big Girl Quilt Top: Done!

i’ve mentioned before, numerous times, the comforter quilt i’m working on for my daughter. it’s going to be comforter sized with some decent draping for a twin mattress (which seems HUGE to me as i’m putting it together). but it’s looking good so far!

lucky me: i got some sewing in over the past few weekends and finally got the top all put together!

BEHOLD:

Comforter Quilt Top: Done!

i’m super excited, though you wouldn’t really know it since i haven’t done ANYTHING since finishing the top. oh well. my daughter’s not even 2 years old yet, and nowhere near ready for a big girl bed… i’ve got time.

what big milestone have you reached recently?

WIP 21 – Not a Wednesday

WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced

i’m not going crazy, really i’m not. i know it’s not a wednesday. but i just need to get my brain sorted out before i lose another day’s worth of productive time on pinterest, facebook, and aimless internet wandering.

so here’s an “update” on my WIPs, copied from an old WIP post with some changes according to my (minimal) progress since then.

it’s not much, but if you’re hankering for more WIP action, head over to Lee’s Freshly Pieced link-up! click on the WIP button above to see all the lovely projects!

prepping (in development):

– flower girl dress for my daughter – not needed until October next year, but definitely already thinking about what i want to do with it (inspiration from this pin and this sweetheart dress tutorial)

– dress for me to wear to our friends’ wedding – not needed until October next year, but wondering if i will really have the time to pull off a hand-made outfit option (inspiration from this pin)

– more wardrobe additions for me and the LO — hoping to refashion some out-grown clothes of mine into awesomeness for either me or the Little One (or both!)

THIS (just above) is what i need more distinct direction on; right now i’m overwhelmed by the possibilities and don’t know where to start!

– activity quiet/soft book for the LO

mixing (new projects):

– quilt for Kaylee – friends are expecting their first bundle of joy (already named Kaylee) and i’m making her a small quilt; some minor quilting left to do before binding and sending it off

simmering (ongoing):

– nothin’ (since i haven’t really sat down and sewn in months)

ready to serve (complete):

– nap mats for the LO – she’s required to have a nap mat WITH pillow for daycare now that she’s moved from the infant room into the toddler room; i used a king-sized pillow sham on clearance from target as a great starting point; they (made 2) came together REALLY fast!

back burner (ongoing but low priority / no progress):

– sampler quilts – Minnesota Block is DONE! and the ticker tape block layout is figured out; more details here

– BSUQ – a quilt requested by my Hubby, meant to look like Boise State’s blue football field but with orange end zones and a big bronco logo in the center of it all; i’ve finished the stitching of the bronco; next i’ll be cutting orange pieces for the “end zones”

– Comforter Q – i KNOW the piecing of the blocks is complete and i think the blocks are all squared up and ready for layout

– monogram mini quilt – no progress, but gaining motivation

– advent calendar – pieced, quilted, awaiting binding and integration of some sort of hanging apparatus

– memory game – about half the pieces are pretty much done except for tucking loose threads away; i’ve finished about 3 pairs of these and the LO seems to like grabbing at them and trying to eat them

– doll quilt – honestly don’t remember this one; like, at all

– Hubby’s tailored shirt – no progress; still need to hem the bottom

non-sewing projects:

– finish writing in my travel journal about our recent trip to Washington DC

– write thank yous to friends who hosted us during our recent trip to DC

– review our Best Bottom cloth diapers for my friend the Cloth Diaper Guru to put on her blog (i’ve guest blogged there once before, did you see?)

– domestic responsibilities – such as clean the house, keep up with the laundry, clean up after the cats (litter gets EVERYWHERE!), etc.

– get some toddler-friendly crayons – need to start the LO on some crafty goodness

what are you working on?

WIP 20 – Workin’ Mama

i’m not gonna lie, i’ve got nothin’. between the in-laws being in town for the turkey holiday and starting the new job, well… i spend all my time at home either eating up every moment i can with the Little One, or trying to catch my breath once she passes out for the night.

so, in preparation for some quiet posting times ahead, why don’t you head on over to Freshly Pieced and find a few new bloggers to frequent? i’ll do my best to capture your attention when i get back into the blogging game.

WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced

see you later!

WIP 19 – Finished Before the Turkey Coma Hits

WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced

i’m really excited about the progress i’ve made this last week! i made good headway on my first couple of sampler blocks, i finished off a couple of projects (including one that will be gifted this Christmas!), and i re-started a couple of other back-burner projects.

there are still a lot of things i’d like to get done before the winter holiday season gets into full swing, but they may have to wait. i won’t have as much time for blogging anymore since i’ll be a full-time employee again! that’s right, i actually found some poor schmucks who’re crazy enough to hire me! but actually, they seem really nice and i’m excited for the opportunity, even though it means leaving my lovely Little One at home.

so this may be the last decent WIP post from me for a while (we’ll see!), but there’s always WIPs to be found over at Lee’s Freshly Pieced link-up! click on the WIP button above to see all the lovely projects!

prepping:

this is a section for projects that i plan to start soon-ish. i’m hoping it’ll be a way to keep my “mixing” section as a “new project” section instead of “everything that sounds awesome that i’m hoping to start this week” section. really, if you want to see the “everything that sounds awesome that i’m hoping to start this week” list, you should just go check out my pins.

– advent calendar – i’ve seen a few different ideas for these, but this one from So You Think You’re Crafty is actually the first one that made me think i SHOULD make one; but then Shanna suggested i check out this quilted one from Sew Mama Sew and i think i may have found my winner…. IF i can finish it quick enough!

– marble crinkle maze – as seen on pinterest (except i plan to add the crinkle feature), i think this would be a great game for our next plane ride with the LO

– handprint ornaments – also inspired by a pinterest find, or maybe this pin instead, i’d like to have these ready to give for the upcoming white winter holiday

mixing:

nothing new — is that a good thing or a bad thing?

simmering:

– sampler quilts – Minnesota Block is DONE! and the ticker tape block layout is figured out; more details here

Minnesota Block

– BSUQ – a quilt requested by my Hubby, how could i say no? it’s meant to look like Boise State’s blue football field, with orange end zones and a big bronco logo in the center of it all; i’ve finished the stitching of the bronco and next i’ll be cutting orange pieces for the “end zones”

Bronco Logo - Stitched

– Comforter Q – i’ve been thinking about this one a lot, so when i finished off the couple of projects, and reached nice pausing points on a couple others, i decided to get this one going again; i’m so excited to finish off piecing the last couple of blocks and get them all squared up; after that it’s time to play with the layout!!

ready to serve:

– cathedral window pillows – YAY! finished in time to send off for Christmas!

– magazine pouch – another project requested by the Hubs – inspired by this and started quite a while ago and been off the radar for almost as long; we both like the fact that the magazines will no longer be precariously balanced on the back of the toilet tank — picture to come once Hubby does his part and mounts it on the wall!

back burner:

– memory game – about half the pieces are pretty much done except for tucking loose threads away; i’ve finished about 3 pairs of these and the LO seems to like grabbing at them and trying to eat them

– doll quilt – no progress; the binding is machine attached on the front with 2 sides hand stitched on the back

– Hubby’s tailored shirt – no progress; still need to hem the bottom

new – 0
complete – 2
total in work – 6

Samplers – Begin!

the samplers have begun! or, at least the first couple of blocks have started to come together… there’s plenty more where that came from!

but i thought i’d give you a run down of my plans, and expand on my previous post a bit. so here’s more details on the breakdown:

the blocks

copied from my previous post, here’s linkies to all the blocks that will be inspiring my samplers:

Quilt 1 Quilt 2 Quilt 3
disappearing 4-patch spider web star the letter ‘e’
interlocking squares circle of geese maple leaf
card trick 8 point star bird patchwork
dresden √ minnesota block  change the ‘noel’ to ‘love’
drunkard’s path starburst diamond ticker tape randomness
cathedral pinwheel crossed star airplane block

the minnesota block is the only one i’ve actually finished. but i’ve started on the ticker tape randomness block as well. plus, now i have all my block styles decided upon. (the airplane block on quilt 3 used to be TBD)

the colors

quilt 3 is sort of my family sampler. our last name starts with ‘e’, i love all maple trees and birds, Hubs and i are both aerospace engineers (hence the airplane block), and **the ticker tape randomness won’t actually be random. it’ll be scraps and snippets from all my favorite projects to date, like little snap shots from those times in my life and those loved ones who the project was gifted to. i took a picture of the planned layout already. see below. so anyways, as a family themed quilt, i’m going to use our wedding colors as the main scheme: red and yellow. i’m currently thinking white sashing, but i’m not completely decided on that. no matter what, my stash doesn’t have that many reds, so i’m toying with the idea of making this a “warm” quilt.

Ticker Tape Randomness Block

quilt 2 is my star sampler, incase you didn’t notice from all the “stars” in the block names. the color scheme for this one was inspired by my friend Amanda who is a very talented professional photographer. she recently shot a wedding with the colors kelly green and navy blue. i love those colors, both apart and together, and i have a decent amount (or at least SOMETHING) of each in my stash, so that’s the combo i’m going with for the star sampler. i think some bright white sashing will really help all those stars pop (as if they won’t already)! if quilt 3 is the “warm” quilt, this one will definitely be the “cool” one!

Minnesota Block

quilt 1, the geometric sampler, doesn’t really have any major underlying theme or heartfelt idea behind it. it’s got curves and straight lines, circles and squares and diamonds, an amalgam of block styles really. as such, i’m going to make it a scrappy rainbow of colors and just say “anything goes” on there. that should help keep it fun and cheap, because i’ve got plenty of scraps and pretty prints!

the quilting

i’m also hoping to use these samplers as a way to practice / perfect my FMQ technique. i’d love to have each quilt, or even each block, showcase a different FMQ style. there are definitely some great samplers and tutorials already out there, like the ones here and here. but honestly, i’m not really thinking that far ahead yet.

how do you get more practice and add to your abilities?

WIP 18 – Repurpose Before Distraction

WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced

it never ends, the list of distractions. there’s always something new, exciting, and so easy to lose myself in. unfortunately, this week’s distractions didn’t have much to do with sewing. but fortunately, they’ve all been fun.

last weekend, our little family went for its first camping trip! we met up at a local-ish spot with a couple of friends who had been out camping a night earlier than us. the days were beautiful, but the nights were cold! it’s a good thing we brought so many blankets, but even so, the LO and i spent most of the night sleeping in the car. i did manage to do a quick sewing project before we left. details are below.

the other major distraction has been the release of the Hunger Games movie trailers. i had read the first book a month or so ago; devoured is probably a better word. it was intense and i couldn’t put it down. but the intensity also made me wait a bit before reading the 2nd and 3rd books. when the movie trailers were released, i decided it was time; so i picked up book 2 from the library and read that within 24 hrs. now i’m working on book 3 and it doesn’t look like i’ll slow down until it’s finished.

so, i’m sorry i’ll be boring this week, but there’s always WIPs to be found over at Lee’s Freshly Pieced link-up! click on the WIP button above to see all the lovely projects!

mixing:

– athletic shirt repurpose – mentioned above, details in the ‘done’ section

simmering:

– sampler quilts – no progress, but i hope to be updating you with my color scheme plans soon! previous posts about this project have more details here and here; but here’s the start of my first block:

– cathedral window pillows – no progress since last week, but the finish line is at least within sight! 2 are totally complete, and the last 2 pillow cover fronts have all the hand-stitched cathedral window borders completed! now i just need to add the envelope closure backs and stuff the covers with the pillows!

– doll quilt – no progress; the binding is machine attached on the front with 2 sides hand stitched on the back

ready to serve:

– athletic shirt repurpose – the book i’ve been reading to prepare for camping with a 7 month old suggested having a base layer of material other than cotton; rather than buy something, i repurposed a work-out shirt that doesn’t fit anymore and turned it into a long sleeved onesie for the LO! i’ve seen enough onesie tutorials to feel comfortable attempting it, and i think it turned out pretty good; it’s the blue one on the right, laying next to the onesie i used as a template pattern. details to come in it’s own post.

athletic shirt repurposed to onesie

back burner:

– BSUQ – a quilt requested by my Hubby, how could i say no? still no progress, though, as i’ve been working on the cathedral window pillows (that i’d like to finish for the holidays); since the college football season goes past the new year, i’ve still got time if i want to get it done this season!

– Comforter Q – i keep thinking about this one because i’m so excited to finish off the last couple of blocks and get them all squared up; after that it’s time to play with the layout!!

– memory game – about half the pieces are pretty much done except for tucking loose threads away; i’ve finished about 3 pairs of these and the LO seems to like grabbing at them and trying to eat them
