Losing Linkies

17 06 2011

i am a peruser. i like to coast through blog after blog and bookmark dozens of individual posts with items i think are pretty or things i want to try my own hand at making. as a result, my web browser is currently OVERLOADED with bookmarks.

and i mean OVERLOADED!

in fact, i think it’s overflowing to the point that i’m pretty sure i’ve lost a few of my precious linkies!

so when i was introduced to pinterest, oh man. my browser breathed a HUGE sigh of relief! and i secretly went “crap, now i’ve got to go through ALL those old links and clean them out!”

if you want to see how my bookmark clean-up process is going, feel free to check out my pinterest page.

what do you bookmark the most?

52 lists – catching up

13 06 2011

i don’t remember how i stumbled upon Kellie’s 52 lists in 52 weeks blog-a-thon, but i think it may be fun.  i love making lists, though i often misplace them or have to rewrite them a dozen times before they’re all checked off. so here’s me catching up with the first two weeks’ worth (she started june 5):

week 1 – today i will…

  • take a shower – check!
  • try to stay cool – a/c broke last night after a day filled with using every heat-producing large appliance we own: the clothes drier, the dishwasher, and the oven (TWICE!)
  • do some hand sewing on a new project – post to come this week
  • show a friend how to do said new project – i’m hoping the Little One and i can hang out with her a bit today since the a/c is out
  • unload the dishwasher – gotta have some domestic duty on here!
  • go for a walk with the little one – i’d really like to shed these last couple inches of baby weight; i need my clothes to fit again!
week 2 – what i learned during my time abroad…
  • always go to the bathroom BEFORE you leave the house – public restrooms in germany cost money to use! on the plus side, they’re a lot cleaner than public restrooms in the states
  • a pack of snacks, water, and an extra layer of clothing is a traveler’s best friend – i wore this beautiful backpack nearly every day during our trip. it was the days when i didn’t pack a snack or an extra layer that i regretted not taking advantage of it being there with me
  • a good pair of walking shoes makes the day more fun – we walked SOOOO much during that trip!
  • nutella is my friend – i ate nutella on toast nearly every morning for breakfast; it was a constant in an unfamiliar world
  • experiences are always greater than the things we get to remember them – we kept the trinket purchases to a minimum, mostly due to luggage space, but also because the memories in our minds and in my journal are so much better than having an object that will sit on a shelf, receiving only an occasional glance to remind you where it came from
  • the germans got it right – this is true for so many things, from their road system to their shopping arrangements, from their public transit to their embracing of the natural curves of the land; it’s all so beautiful and such a great example of working with the land instead of sucking the life out of it
are you a list-maker too?

Cloth Diaper Trials

13 05 2011

ever since we got pregnant, i’d been hoping to do at least part time cloth diapering.  there are so many benefits, it was pretty easy to convince Hubby to at least give them a try despite their somewhat high initial price tag.

there are trial systems and rentals we could’ve done to get around the high up front price, but that’s still a cost. so we opted to do our research and choose just one diaper brand and style to try.

we chose the hybrid system by Best Bottom.  it’s an insert that snaps to a shell (instead of stuffing into a pocket) and then the shell snaps (or velcros) onto baby’s waist.  the shells are size-adjustable and there are different sizes of inserts as well. the shells can be worn through multiple inserts as long as they don’t get too soiled.

once we decided to try Best Bottom, we bought just 1 shell and 4 inserts (from Lil’ Tulip’s, a MN company who has FREE SHIPPING to the US all the time!).  we knew that amount of gear would only allow us to use the diaper for about half a day at a time, but it’s how we chose to do it.

so far we’ve really enjoyed them! the Little One seems to have less diaper rash while wearing them. probably because as soon as she wets the insert, she cries to get it taken off. yes, they are a bit bulkier than the disposables right now, but not so much that her onesies don’t fit over them.

i can’t wait to get the rest of our supply so we can cloth diaper full time (except for outings). it’ll be especially nice to have the wet bag we ordered, because the plastic bins in our trofast changing table seem to soak up some of the soiled diaper smell…. ew!

we’ll give you an update (if you’d like) once we get the full set into the rotation and see what they’re like at night.

what do you think of the recent cloth diaper resurgence?
