Quilting is Not Free

6 11 2011

free motion quilting is difficult. and as such, i’ve kinda given up on it.

for the Little One’s quilted christmas stocking, i just followed the zig zag pattern that i had pieced together.

and my recent post about my first quilt inspired me to finish off the doll quilt made with the same fabrics. i had attempted FMQ on the DQ a few times before, but was never really happy with the results. so this time i just left out the “Free” part and followed a simplified version of pattern on the blocks.

DQ Front

i like how it turned out. sort of a + and o design since the blocks are pretty much based on those simple shapes.

DQ Back

i was thinking of using all the scraps leftover from the LO’s stocking to make some bias tape for binding. but after realizing that it would be very seam-a-licious, that and the fact that the light starry fabric is very thin, i decided to just use up more of the green plaid. as you can see, i’ve started the binding, but still have more than 3 sides to go. more hand-stitching on my to-do list!

how do you quilt your DQs?

I just tried free motion quilting for the first time this weekend and it is HARD! I felt like I was racing down the freeway without breaks and just making a mess, LOL! The concept is great, but it will take more practice. From now on, I am all about following existing lines, like your blocks. :) What a fun little quilt!

thanks Nissa! and Lindsay, i felt the SAME WAY when i tried FMQ. it just didn’t work for me. or i didn’t work for it. i dunno. but i’ve never really been good at coloring outside the lines, so i guess i shouldn’t have been surprised.
